Why Is New Zealand Shutting Down 3G?
New Zealandβs 3G networks are being turned off by 2025.
Hereβs why itβs happening β and what it means for your phone.
π‘ The Big Picture
All major mobile operators β One NZ, Spark, and 2degrees β are phasing out 3G by the end of 2025
(some by early 2026). The goal: free up old 3G spectrum for faster and more efficient 4G and 5G networks.

βοΈ 3G vs 4G β Whatβs the Difference?
3G (third generation) was built mainly for calls and basic web browsing.
4G (fourth generation) is made for streaming, HD video, GPS apps, and modern messaging.
| Feature | 3G | 4G / LTE |
|---|---|---|
| Average Speed | 1β10 Mbps | 20β100 Mbps + |
| Voice Calls | Standard Voice (3G only) | HD Voice via VoLTE (4G) |
| Battery Use | Higher | More Efficient |
| Supports Apps Like | WhatsApp (text only), Maps (slow) | Instagram reels, YouTube HD, Zoom calls |
In short: if you still use 3G, youβll lose calling and data once 3G towers go offline.
4G with VoLTE is now essential β it keeps your phone working and your calls clear.
π‘ Real-World Example
A customer brought in an old iPhone 6 that only connected to 3G for calls.
Once we turned on 4G and VoLTE in Settings β Mobile β Mobile Data Options β Voice & Data,
the phone began making HD calls again β ready for the 3G shutdown.

π Why 3G Is Ending in New Zealand
- Spectrum efficiency: Reallocating 3G frequencies to 4G/5G improves speed and coverage.
- Device shift: Over 98% of phones in NZ already use 4G or 5G.
- Better voice quality: VoLTE calls use less power and sound clearer.
- Lower costs: 3G hardware and maintenance are expensive.
- Future growth: Supports IoT devices, rural coverage, and next-gen apps.
